San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose Police Department arrested suspect Brian Gillean for arson - 453 PC (felony) and a no bail felony warrant for probation violation. 

On February 23, 2020, and March 3, 2020, multiple fires occurred in the downtown and Rose Garden area of San Jose. The suspect threw multiple molotov cocktails (glass bottles with a fuse) at structures and walkways causing minor damage. The suspect fled the scene and was not apprehended. 

On Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at about 1:45 PM, witnesses called 911 to report a suspect throwing molotov cocktails out of a vehicle and onto the sidewalk in the 1600 block of Emory Street in San Jose. Thankfully, witnesses provided officers with critical suspect information. At about 9:28 PM, the San Jose Police Department's Street Crimes Unit arrested Gillean in the area of South 5th Street and East William Street in San Jose.

San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia said, “We are thankful that this dangerous individual has been apprehended. This is another fantastic example of community vigilance combined with officer tenacity.”

“I’m very pleased with the collaboration between the San Jose police and fire department arson unit,” said San Jose Fire Chief Robert Sapien, Jr. “The solid investigative skills on both teams have led to the quick capture of a suspect who was endangering our community.” 

Suspect Gillean is known to frequent many of the areas associated to the fires under investigation. Suspect Gillean was booked into Santa Clara County Jail for the above listed charges. 

Investigators with the San Jose Fire Department Arson Unit are the lead investigators on this case. Investigators with the San Jose Police Department's Assaults Unit are assisting Arson investigators with following-up on additional leads.
