MEDIA ADVISORY
The San Jose Police Department will begin community outreach, via virtual meetings, to proceed with a pilot gunshot detection program in the Cadillac Winchester Neighborhood to address and help reduce gun crime.
SJPD has entered in a zero-cost agreement with V5 Systems to employ their OnSound acoustic gunshot detection technology for proactively detecting the frequency and location of gunfire. The system provides real-time alerts to law enforcement so they can respond faster to locations than traditional gunfire reporting typically allows. This technology aims to reduce overall gun violence and improve community safety.
The system helps to cover gaps in the reporting of gunshot incidents. Through the use of this technology, we hope to create an environment that improves police response time and ultimately reduces gun-related crime.
This pilot program will be installed in the Cadillac Winchester Neighborhood. This neighborhood has historically been impacted by gun violence. Gunshot detection technology that is implemented in collaboration with the community is one tool that can help address this issue.
"As illegal gun seizures continue to grow, so does our need for technology in addressing gunfire and violence within our neighborhoods. Our communities are understandably, at times, reluctant to call and report these incidents. This could lead to a delay in police response times and providing life saving measures to potential victims of gun violence. We will continue to look for technologies that make our neighborhoods and residents safe."
