On September 22, 2020, at approximately 8:35 AM, Officers responded to the area of Parkmoor Avenue and Meridian Avenue to investigate a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

An adult male was crossing Meridian Avenue in a motorized wheelchair, in a marked crosswalk. It was determined that the pedestrian entered the crosswalk while the ‘walk’ signal was displayed. For unknown reasons the wheelchair was moving at a slow pace. The traffic light signal turned from red to green for northbound vehicular traffic on Meridian Avenue while the wheelchair was still in the crosswalk. A Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Meridian Avenue when it struck the pedestrian in the wheelchair.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Prius remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The pedestrian remained hospitalized for an extended amount of time and passed away on July 23rd, 2021. An autopsy was performed by the Santa Clara County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office.

On September 22, 2021, our Traffic Investigations Unit received notification from the Medical Examiner that the victim’s cause of death was due primarily to injuries sustained in the collision.

Although this collision occurred in 2020, the victim was pronounced deceased this year. This fatality is being added to this year’s totals.

This is the 45th fatal collision and the 46th victim of 2021. It is also the 19th pedestrian death of the year.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.

This investigation will be presented to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review.
