On June 25th, 2022, at approximately 3:47 AM, the San José Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 5900 block of Amapola Drive. The home was occupied by an elderly husband and wife. The husband, who was suffering from severe smoke inhalation, was rescued in an upstairs bedroom by SJFD personnel. The male was transported to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition. SJFD arson investigators deemed the fire was started intentionally by suspect Makino, the victim’s wife.
San José Police Department Officers responded to assist with the investigation. With information received from SJFD arson investigators, the suspect was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for arson related charges.
On June 28th, the victim succumbed to his injuries sustained in the fire and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
An additional charge of homicide was added to the already pending charges.
The identity of the deceased victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
This is the City's 18th homicide of 2022.
