On August 3rd, 2022, Patrol Officers responded to take a report of a stolen vehicle, assault with a firearm, and the theft of an American bulldog. The victim stated that a male, later identified as suspect Johnny Jesse Chagolla, stole her vehicle and her dog. The victim was able to recover her stolen vehicle, but the suspect demanded an undisclosed amount of cash for the safe return of her dog.
The suspect confronted the victim while she was in her recovered car and attempted to shoot her. The suspect missed the victim and shattered the back window of the vehicle. The suspect also slashed two of the victim’s tires, and subsequently fled.
Assaults Unit detectives began an extensive investigation into this incident. An arrest warrant was issued for suspect Chagolla charging him with several felonies including grand theft, robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, and assault with a deadly weapon.
On August 24th, 2022, the San José Police Department’s Covert Response Unit located and arrested Chagolla in San José. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for charges in this incident as well as other outstanding warrants, including one for a previous domestic violence incident.
Assaults Unit detectives were able to locate the missing dog at a residence in San José. They reunited the canine with the victim/owner.
