On August 17th, 2022, at approximately 1:20 AM, five masked suspects committed an armed robbery at Peter's Bakery located at 3108 Alum Rock Avenue. Two of the suspects held employees at knifepoint and demanded to know where the cash was kept, while the other three suspects rummaged through the business. Fearing for their lives, the victims told the suspects where the cash box was. The suspects took the cash box and then fled in a white BMW. San José Police collected surveillance footage of the suspects and vehicle.
During the investigation, Robbery Unit detectives discovered the same five suspects had committed a commercial burglary at Arteaga's Food Center just 45 minutes prior to the robbery at Peter's Bakery; the suspects broke a window to the business, made entry, stole several items from a jewelry kiosk within the business, and then fled in the same white BMW.
Automated license plate reader cameras assisted in identifying the white BMW. Through investigative follow-up, detectives were then able to identify all five suspects and link the suspects to both crimes.
On October 25th, 2022, four of the five suspects were taken into custody. Three of the suspects are juveniles ranging in age from 14-17. All three juveniles were taken into custody by the Department’s Covert Response Unit at residences in San José. Suspect Smith was arrested for an outstanding warrant related to this case in the city of Sacramento, he is also currently on parole. Suspect Macias remains outstanding, and we are asking for the public’s help in locating him.
