In January of 2023, Detectives with the San José Police Department’s Gun & Hazardous Offender Suppression Team (G.H.O.S.T.) began an investigation for illegal possession of assault weapons, illegal firearms trafficking, negligent discharge of a firearm, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and narcotics sales.

Suspect Eric Diaz-Ramirez and a juvenile suspect were identified as the primary suspects. During the investigation, Detectives determined that Diaz-Ramirez was supplying various firearms to the juvenile suspect. Suspect Diaz-Ramirez is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Detectives later determined that the juvenile suspect had been in possession of a loaded concealed firearm while on campus at Independence High School during school hours.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants for both suspects in addition to search warrants for their residences. 

On Wednesday, March 15, 2023, Detectives, with the assistance of SJPD Special Operations personnel and Officers from the Santa Clara Police Department and Campbell Police Department, served two simultaneous search warrants and took the suspects into custody in San José without incident.
