On June 20, 2023, at approximately 5:49 AM, patrol Officers responded to the area of S. Capitol Avenue and Alum Rock Avenue to investigate a person down. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A 2009 blue Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by an adult female, was travelling southbound on S. Capitol Avenue when she attempted to pull over to the curb to park in front of a nearby residence. While pulling over, the vehicle struck an adult male pedestrian who was laying in the bike lane outside of any marked crosswalk. The driver left the scene but returned shortly after Officers arrived. The driver was cooperative and alcohol/drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.
The adult male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
This is the 21st fatal collision, and the 22nd traffic death of 2023. This is also the 14th pedestrian death of the year.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
