On July 31, 2022, at approximately 3:55 AM, Officers responded to the 300 block of Umbarger Road for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they located an adult male victim who was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second adult male victim transported himself to a local hospital and was determined to have non-life-threatening injuries.

On September 13, 2022, Noel Cortez was arrested by San Jose Police Department Officers for an unrelated warrant out of Arizona. The suspect was taken into custody and extradited to the Arizona State Prison Complex for his warrant. 

After extensive follow up, SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives identified Suspect Cortez as the person responsible for the homicide and obtained a warrant for his arrest. On June 28, 2023, Detectives took custody of Suspect Cortez at the Arizona State Prison and subsequently extradited him back to San Jose the following day where he was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for homicide.

On July 31st, 2022, at approximately 3:55 AM, Officers responded to the 300 block of Umbarger Road on a report of a gunshots being fired. When they arrived, they found an adult male victim suffering from a life-threatening injury. That male was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second victim, also an adult male, self-transported himself to a local hospital. The second victim had a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The identity of the deceased victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.

This is the City's 24th homicide of 2022.
