On June 29, 2023, at approximately 8:22 PM, Officers responded to the area of Dixie Road and Lanai Avenue for a call of a person shot. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. On July 7, 2023, SJPD was notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The SJPD Assaults Unit and Homicide Unit Detectives began a thorough investigation into this incident and identified the suspect as Tyrese Burse, a resident of San José. On July 11, 2023, SJPD's Covert Response Unit (CRU) located the suspect in the city of Sacramento. The suspect barricaded in a residence and was taken into custody shortly after 6:00 PM with assistance from the Sacramento Police Department. The suspect was transported to San José and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for homicide.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
This was the City's 20th homicide of 2023.
