From March 2023 through April 2023, the San José Police Department investigated over 10 commercial burglaries of “smoke shop” type businesses.
During the course of the investigation, SJPD Burglary Unit Detectives identified Jose Cabellos as one of the primary suspects responsible for at least eight commercial burglaries. SJPD believes the suspect had additional accomplices and Detectives are following up on leads. Detectives obtained a warrant for the suspect's arrest and a search warrant for the suspect's residence. On June 16, 2023, Officers from the Covert Response Unit arrested Cabellos in the city of San José.
Through the month of July, 2023, several more burglaries matching the same criminal pattern occurred. On July 24th, 2023 at approximately 3:00 AM, an attempted burglary occurred at a smoke shop in the 4700 block of Almaden Expressway. The suspect vehicle fled prior to police arrival. The suspects attempted another burglary of a smoke shop in the city of Santa Clara. The second attempted burglary was interrupted by Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Deputies who were in the area and intervened. The vehicle fled and deputies apprehended three juvenile occupants after the vehicle crashed. The three juvenile suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.
In all the burglaries, the suspects had a pattern of using stolen Kia or Hyundai model vehicles to collide with the exterior of the businesses, causing significant damage to the entrance and breaching the structure. The suspects would then enter the businesses and steal merchandise before fleeing the scene in their stolen vehicle. These suspects are believed to be responsible for several additional commercial burglaries outside the city of San José.
Stolen Vehicles: The SJPD Burglary Unit has identified a trend in stolen 2010 – 2021 Kia and 2015 – 2021 Hyundai vehicles being used to commit burglaries and other crimes. These models have been identified in several viral social media videos educating thieves on how to use USB cords left in the car to commit vehicle theft.
Targeted Businesses: The SJPD Burglary Unit has identified a trend in smoke shop and similar smoking accessory businesses being targeted, damaged, and burglarized using the above stolen vehicles.
Anyone with any information or surveillance video regarding the above commercial burglaries is urged to contact Detectives Gach #4338 and Bergstrom #4318 of the San Jose Police Department Burglary Unit at 4338@sanjoseca.gov or 4318@sanjoseca.gov or 408-277-4521.
