On September 6, 2023, at approximately 1:12 AM, patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 100 block of West Alma Avenue. Officers located two adult male victims who had been shot at least one time each. The victims were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Based on the preliminary information available, three suspects had fled the scene after the shooting in a dark colored sedan.
Responding Officers observed the suspect vehicle fleeing from the scene and attempted a felony vehicle stop. The vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, two firearms were seen being discarded from the suspect vehicle. Both firearms were recovered by Officers, one of which was a privately made firearm (ghost gun). The pursuit continued northbound and ultimately terminated in East Palo Alto, where two suspects were immediately taken into custody, and a third barricaded in a nearby residence. The SJPD MERGE Unit responded and, in cooperation with East Palo Alto PD, took the third suspect into custody a short time later without incident.

San José Police patrol Officers obtained a search warrant for the barricaded suspect's residence, and the SJPD Assaults Unit authored and were granted a search warrant for an additional suspect residence in East Palo Alto. With the assistance of a contingent of Special Operations personnel, Detectives conducted a thorough investigation, and during the search they located ammunition and additional contraband that added additional criminal charges to the three suspects.
The suspects were transported and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for various crimes including attempted murder, weapons violations, resisting arrest, and reckless felony evading.
"This case is yet another example of how our officers are the best in the country and the risks they encounter taking dangerous criminals off the streets on a daily basis to keep our city safe," said Chief of Police Anthony Mata. "The quick response, and subsequent arrest, very likely saved lives and prevented these suspects from hurting anyone else."
