On June 6, 2023, at approximately 1:20 PM, Officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of Utopia Place for a report of a possible dead body. Upon arrival, Officers located an elderly adult female that paramedics pronounced deceased at the scene. Patrol Officers conducted a preliminary investigation, and the case was turned over to the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office. On July 18, 2023, the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office classified the victim's death as a homicide, and Detectives developed probable cause to believe it was due to intentional fentanyl poisoning. The manner of death will be officially determined by the Coroner's Office.

SJPD Homicide Detectives then began a comprehensive and thorough investigation into this incident and identified Bradley Dexter, a resident of San José and adult son of the victim as the potential suspect.

On September 22, 2023, the suspect was determined to also be responsible for a violent attack on his adult father, leaving the second victim hospitalized with serious injuries. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect for elder abuse and felony assault.

On September 25, 2023, SJPD patrol Officers located the suspect and arrested him in the city of San José. Follow up was conducted and the suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for homicide, poisoning, two counts of elder abuse, and his arrest warrant.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

This is the City's 28th homicide of 2023.
