On August 15, 2023, San José Police Department Detectives assigned to the Silicon Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce (ICAC) investigated a report of a sexual assault of a minor by a former Hoover Middle School teacher. During the investigation, Matthew Gonzalez was identified as the primary suspect and it was discovered that the assault occurred on the campus of Hoover Middle School. Gonzalez was also a former teacher at Willow Glen Middle School and a teaching assistant at the San José State University Child Development Center.
ICAC Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect and a search warrant for his residence. On October 2, 2023, the suspect was arrested by Detectives in the city of Campbell and later booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for sending harmful materials to a minor and for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.
