On January 22, 2024, at approximately 6:11 AM, patrol Officers responded to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a garbage collection vehicle in the area of Elm Street and McKendrie Street. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A 2020 white garbage collection vehicle, occupied by an adult male driver, was turning from southbound Elm Street onto westbound McKendrie Street when it struck an adult male pedestrian who was crossing McKendrie Street from the north curb to the south curb in an unmarked crosswalk.
The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later stabilized. The driver of the garbage collection vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.
On January 26th, 2024, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
This is the 6th fatal collision and 6th traffic death of 2024. This is also the 4th pedestrian death of 2024.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
