On February 13, 2024 at approximately 4:31 PM, Patrol Officers responded to a local hospital for a report of a stabbing victim who had been dropped off at the emergency room. Despite emergency medical care, the adult male victim succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased. Officers determined that the stabbing incident had occurred in the area of Spring Street and Taylor Street.
Officers responded to the area of Spring Street and Taylor Street and located a crime scene. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had been in a physical altercation prior to being transported to the hospital.
During the course of the investigation, San José Police Department Homicide Detectives immediately identified Ryan Hope as the primary suspect, and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
On February 17, 2024, SJPD Patrol Officers conducted a proactive vehicle stop in the 200 block of Umbarger Road. Patrol Officers identified suspects Hope and Chavez in the vehicle, and subsequently arrested both suspects.
Suspect Hope was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for homicide charges and suspect Chavez was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for felony assault charges.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
This is the City's 5th homicide of 2024.
