Following up on a previous firearms investigation, the San José Police Department Special Operations Metro Unit began a comprehensive investigation into the illegal manufacturing and sale of firearms at a residence located in the area of River Ash Court and Stone Canyon Drive in San José. During the course of the investigation, Officers identified the primary suspects as David Rios and Dustin Mohl. Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence.
On April 10, 2024, with the assistance of the Special Operations M.E.R.G.E. Unit, Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, Street Crimes Unit, and Downtown Services Unit, Officers executed the search warrant at the residence. During execution of the search warrant, Officers located and seized the following:
- Two assault rifles
- Three assault rifle lower receivers
- Assault rifle and firearm manufacturing parts
- One privately manufactured firearm and an unregistered firearm
- Multiple rounds of ammunition
- Numerous extended magazines
- Tools and documents consistent with firearms manufacturing
At the time of the search warrant service, the two suspects were apprehended at the residence. Officers determined one of the suspects possessed a storage unit located in the 90 block of Montecito Vista Drive in San José. Officers obtained a search warrant for the storage unit and located the following:
- Six assault rifle lower receivers
- Numerous assault rifle extended magazines
- Thousands of rounds of ammunition
- Various assault rifle manufacturing tools

Suspects Rios and Mohl were booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for the crime of conspiracy to manufacture assault weapons for sale as well as several other firearm related charges.
