***UPDATE*** SJPD Arrests Suspect Responsible for Homicide #17

On June 2, 2024, at approximately 11:19 AM, Patrol Officers responded to a report of a person down in the area of North 17th Street and East Santa Clara Street. The reporting party called police to report that an adult male victim was bleeding and not breathing. The caller believed the victim may have been involved in a disturbance. When Officers arrived, they located the adult male victim suffering from at least one stab wound. Despite life saving efforts by Officers and medics, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The suspect fled prior to police arrival.

The San José Police Department Homicide Unit responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of the investigation, Detectives identified the suspect as Sylvia Ortega and obtained a warrant for her arrest.

On June 5, 2024, Officers from the Special Operations MERGE Unit located and apprehended Suspect Ortega at a residence in San José. Suspect Ortega was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for murder. 

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.

This was the City's 17th homicide of 2024.
