On June 9, 2024, at approximately 4:28 AM, San José Police Department Officers responded to check on the welfare of an adult male suspect throwing various objects out a residential window in the 700 block of Delaware Avenue. When Officers arrived, they identified themselves and attempted to speak with the suspect. The suspect refused to exit the residence, and as the Officers walked away, the suspect fired multiple gunshots in their direction. No Officers were struck by gunfire.
The suspect, identified as Anthony Handy, continued to barricade inside the residence. The SJPD Tactical Negotiator Unit (TNU) and MERGE Unit arrived on scene to assist. After unsuccessful negotiation attempts, a non-lethal chemical agent was utilized to encourage the suspect to surrender. Suspect Handy subsequently jumped out from the second-story window and was taken into custody. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained from jumping out of the window.
An unregistered serialized firearm was recovered from the scene. The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

On June 11, 2024, the suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for attempted murder.
"Our Officers put their lives on the line everyday," stated Acting Chief of Police Paul Joseph, "but these deadly attacks are becoming all too frequent here in San José and we can not allow this to continue."
