MEDIA ADVISORY

Today, the San José Police Department is announcing the launch of a new crime statistics dashboard that allows members of the public to filter crime data by San José City Council Districts.

In early July, the San José Police Department launched a comprehensive crime dashboard reflective of the diverse crime data reported to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) via the California Department of Justice. This initial information visualization tool represents formal statistics following a data review process that ensures adherence to the FBI UCR standards. Today’s newly published dashboard represents preliminary crime data by offense with the added capability of refinement by City Council District. This allows the public to extract meaningful and relevant information.

This dashboard has been created by the SJPD Crime Analysis Unit using Microsoft Power BI and can be accessed from the Department’s Police Dashboards menu on our main SJPD website under the "Records" tab.

“This new crime incidents dashboard is a vital step in enhancing transparency and community engagement,” stated SJPD Chief of Police Paul Joseph. "This tool empowers the public by providing easy access to local crime data, allowing residents to explore trends and gain insights specific to their neighborhoods.”

“I ran for office to hold government accountable through greater focus on the basics, like public safety, and better use of data and technology,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. “I’m thrilled our Police Department is making crime data more accessible, so residents can see for themselves if our efforts to create safer neighborhoods are working.”

“Thank you to the San José Police Department Crime Analysis Unit for developing a helpful tool that enables our residents to see crime incidents and trends in their neighborhoods. This interactive resource tool ensures the community has up-to-date crime data and is accessible to all,” said San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire.

"I am delighted that the San José Police Department is launching a new interactive Crime Statistics Dashboard, now featuring data by Council District. Advocated for in a memo I submitted to the Public Safety, Finance, & Strategic Support Committee in September 2024, the dashboard is arriving months ahead of schedule.  This update provides greater geographic context, localizes crime data, and empowers our community and officers with actionable insights. Together, we are showcasing our innovation and commitment to public safety and making San José safer and stronger,” said former Councilmember Arjun Batra.
