On June 26, 2025, at approximately 4:58 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision involving an electric scooter that occurred in the area of Capitol Expressway and Tuers Road. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

A 2005 white Chevy Astrovan, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling westbound on Capitol Expressway west of Tuers Road when it veered into the bike lane and struck an adult male rider who was also traveling westbound on Capitol Expressway. The scooter rider was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries but later stabilized. 

The vehicle fled the scene but was stopped in the area by incoming police officers. The driver was arrested for felony hit and run as well as DUI and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. 

On July 28, 2025, the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner advised SJPD Traffic Investigations Unit Detectives that the scooter rider succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

This was the 18th fatal collision and 18th traffic death of 2025.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Office of the Medical Examiner.
