On September 8, 2025, at approximately 8:02 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and an electric scooter in the area of Santa Clara Street and Cahill Street in the city of San José. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

A 2021 black Ram pickup truck, operated by an adult male driver, was traveling eastbound on Santa Clara Street when it struck an adult female scooterist who was travelling northbound in the east crosswalk at the intersection with Cahill Street.  

The scooterist was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. 

The vehicle immediately fled the scene. Officers conducted follow up and located the unoccupied suspect vehicle away from the scene. The vehicle was determined to be an unreported stolen vehicle.

The San José Police Department Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Detectives, with the assistance of patrol Officers, identified Justin Perez, as the primary suspect. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and search warrant for the suspect's residence. 

On September 10, 2025, with the assistance of the Special Operations METRO and Violent Crimes Enforcement Team (VCET), Suspect Perez was located and apprehended in the city of San José. The suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for crimes related to felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter. 

This is the 24th fatal collision and 24th traffic death of 2025.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
