San José, CA —The San José Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announce a new small business security rebate program today while standing in front of Kim Hung Jewelry — the site of a violent daytime robbery earlier this month that left its 88-year-old owner injured.

“We are back here today to support this hardworking family and business as they recover from this shocking crime.” said Chief of Police Paul Joseph. “Our detectives will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice. But we are also here to do more — to help protect this business and others from future attacks by providing them with a device that connects their security cameras to our Real Time Intelligence Center for free as part of a new grant program.”

“Public safety is our highest priority, and when our small businesses feel safe, our whole community thrives,” said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “This partnership shows how we can all share in the responsibility — with law enforcement, the District Attorney, and the City working as One Team with business owners to protect our neighborhoods. With this program, San José is making a commitment to ensure welcoming and vibrant neighborhoods.”

“Last week, a brazen smash-and-grab shook our community,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “This week, as our detectives work to bring those responsible to justice, we’re taking action — teaming up with the District Attorney’s Office to provide devices to 200 businesses that will connect their security systems to our Real Time Crime Intelligence Center. By hooking them up to our police network, we can access footage faster, catch criminals quicker, and help prevent the next attack before it happens.”

Small businesses are now able to connect their existing security camera systems directly to SJPD’s Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC) by purchasing a connection device. This will allow police to view incidents like the smash and grab robberies or other emergencies while they are in progress providing responding officers with critical, real-time information.

To make this technology accessible, DA Jeff Rosen is providing $100,000 in funding to provide CORE devices at no cost to qualifying small businesses. The funding comes from proceeds of a DA settlement with Google and will cover the cost for 200 businesses in San Jose.
