On October 16, 2025, at approximately 4:05 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the 2800 Block of Bascom Avenue for a report of a traffic collision involving a garbage truck and a pedestrian.
The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A 2020 blue Peterbilt garbage truck, driven by an adult male, was traveling westbound on Shamrock Drive and turning northbound into the rear alley of a strip mall in the 2800 block of Bascom Avenue when it struck a pedestrian who was lying in the driveway and covered in blankets.
The adult male pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the garbage truck remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
This incident is the city's 29th fatal collision and 29th traffic death of 2025. This is also the 14th pedestrian death of 2025.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
