On October 22, 2025, at approximately 8:07 AM, San Jose Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a family disturbance at a residence in the 400 Block of South Buena Vista Avenue. The reporting party believed a physical confrontation was occurring and requested a police response. Prior to arrival, a separate reporting party in the involved unit reported that an adult male was experiencing a drug overdose at the location. When Officers arrived, they located the adult male patient who was completely naked and acting erratic. Officers detained him. Minutes later, he began experiencing a medical emergency. Officers summoned paramedics and began life savings measures on scene. The patient was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
The incident is being investigated as an in-custody death, per protocol.
The identity of the patient will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner after confirming his identity and notifying next of kin.
A joint criminal investigation by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit is underway. The case is being monitored administratively by the San José Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.
