DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint Planned this Week
San Jose, Calif. – San Jose Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint on 4/12/19, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.
San Jose Police Department reminds drivers that "DUI Doesn't Just Mean Booze." If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.
San Jose Police Department offers these reminders to ensure you have a safe night of fun that doesn't involve a DUI:
Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home.
See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home.
Report drunk drivers – Call 911.
Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic drinks. Monitor who are drinking and how they are getting home.
Getting home safely is cheap, but getting a DUI is not! Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be upwards of $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses not to mention possible jail time.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided to San Jose Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, April 27th, 2019 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
San Jose, CA - On Saturday, April 27th, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the San Jose Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the sites listed below (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches). The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last fall, Americans turned in 460 tons (more than 900,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in almost 11 million pounds more than 5,500 tons of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the next upcoming Take Back Day event, go to the www.DEATakeBack.com.

Suspect Kevin Ta
San Jose, Calif. - On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, San Jose police officers responded to the 76 gas station located at 2101 N. 1st St. in San Jose on a report of an armed robbery with shots fired. The caller reported the suspect robbed a customer in the gas station parking lot, then robbed the cashier. A second customer interrupted the robbery and fled from the store. The suspect, later identified as Lenard Hall, chased the second customer and fired several shots at him, but missed.
When the call was broadcast, some officers were on an unrelated car stop of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot nearby. Officers discontinued their investigation, released the driver, and responded to the robbery/shooting call. Due to the officers' quick response, they located Hall hiding in the bushes across the street, and apprehended him with the assistance of a San Jose police canine.
A check of Hall’s criminal history revealed he was responsible for a string of eight armed robberies in late 2016-2017. Detectives looked into other similar unsolved robberies and identified two additional robberies connected to Hall. Detectives served a search warrant at Hall's residence where items linking him to the additional robberies were located.
Through follow-up investigation, detectives determined Kevin Ta, the driver of the suspicious vehicle investigated earlier by officers, was Hall's associate and co-conspirator in the gas station robbery and shooting. Detectives also identified Ta as the person responsible for another armed robbery on May 20, 2019, in San Jose.
On Friday, June 14, 2019, Ta was arrested in the City of Santa Clara by the San Jose Police Department's Covert Response Unit.

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint Planned this Week
San Jose, Calif. - San Jose Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint on 6/28/19, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.
San Jose Department reminds drivers that "DUI Doesn't Just Mean Booze." If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.
San Jose Police Department offers these reminders to ensure you have a safe night of fun that doesn't involve a DUI:
Always use a designated sober driver - a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation - to get home.
See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive - Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home.
Report drunk drivers - Call 911.
Hosting a party - Offer nonalcoholic drinks.

San Jose Police Department Launches "SAFE PLACE" Initiative to Combat Hate Crimes
San Jose Police Department Launches "SAFE PLACE" Initiative to Combat Hate Crimes
MEDIA ADVISORY
San Jose, Calif. — SAFE PLACE is a nationally recognized program that creates a partnership between the San Jose Police Department, local businesses and organizations who place a rainbow-colored SAFE PLACE decal at the entrance to their location. Participants must train employees to call police on behalf of any hate crime victim then allow the person to safely remain in the location until police arrive.
"We know it can be difficult for victims of hate crimes or hate incidents to come forward. SAFE PLACE sends a strong message that the community and the police department takes these crimes seriously. I hope that if someone is unfortunately victimized by hate they know that the police department and the community are here to support them," said San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia.
Created by the Seattle Police Department in 2015, the program originally was developed to combat anti- LGBTQ hate crimes but now is used to address all types of hate crimes and hate incidents. "The program is not just targeting victims - people who might consider spreading hate should take notice that this community has banded together and San Jose is not a safe haven for your bigotry,"said Chief Garcia.
SAFE PLACE launches today with all Starbucks and Wells Fargo locations participating.
Tim Dubenko, Regional Director of Operations for Starbucks said, “We are excited to partner with SJPD and have all of our 62 locations in San Jose participate.” The Safe Place initiative, he said, “aligns with our company’s values and mission, which is to embrace diversity, create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone.”
Wells Fargo said all 25 San Jose branch locations would also participate.
Wiggsy Sivertson, who serves on the police department’s LGBTQ advisory board, also praised the new program and said, “Hate is an equal opportunity form of violence and the fact that business and the police are working together to address the problem is significant.”
The program launch date was set to align with Silicon Valley Pride activities happening this week leading up to the parade and festival where SJPD will be participating in both events.
Media availability with Chief Garcia, representatives from Starbucks, Wells Fargo, and LGBTQ community leaders can be arranged through the SAFE PLACE program coordinator and Department's LGBTQ Community Liaison, Officer James Gonzales at 408-893-7516 or james.gonzales@sanjoseca.gov.
Visit SJPD.org/SAFEPLACE for more information or to apply for the program.

SJPD Launches The Report John Program to Reduce Human Trafficking and Prostitution
The San Jose Police Department has launched The Report John Program to reduce human trafficking and prostitution in high impact areas by targeting sex buyer activity
MEDIA ADVISORY
Police ask the community to use new online tool targeting
sex buyers to fight human trafficking and prostitution
The Report John Program works to shrink street-level prostitution and reduce the demand for sex workers in neighborhoods. Community members can now join the fight to reduce human trafficking and prostitution by reporting "John's" they suspect of soliciting sex workers.
"We are empowering our community in an effort to combat the possible trafficking of women as well as the impacts that prostitution has on our most vulnerable neighborhoods," said San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia.
Report John is a simple website form used on your phone, tablet, or desktop that crowdsources our eyes and ears on the street. Residents can upload a photo and provide vehicle and other identifying information on a potential John. The Department's Human Trafficking Unit then evaluates the information and determines if further investigation is warranted. If appropriate, a Public Safety Announcement (PSA) letter is sent to the registered owner's address, alerting the registered owner that his or her vehicle was seen in an area known for high levels of prostitution. This letter also serves to educate the registered owner about the dangers of prostitution and related illicit activities.
The Report John Program is a high tech addition to the multifaceted approach of reducing street-level prostitution in San Jose involving law enforcement, residents, nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, and programs.
Councilmember Sylvia Arenas said, "Today’s announcement is a major step forward and it is part of a larger effort between myself, my female council colleagues, our Police Department, and our City Administration to improve the City’s response to sexual assault, human trafficking, domestic violence, and all forms of violence against women."
The Report John Program was created to reduce human trafficking and prostitution in high impact areas by targeting sex buyer activity. The Report John Program acts as a deterrent to potential "Johns" looking to purchase sex by empowering residents to report sex buying activity.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, October 26th, 2019 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
San Jose, CA - On Saturday, October 26th, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the San Jose Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs.

This Saturday, 12/14/19, is the Cops Care Cancer Foundation Fantasy Flight 2019!
Fantasy Flight is an event for any child that is battling cancer or any other life-threatening illness. Police agencies from all over the Bay Area assist and contribute.
2019 Fantasy Flight Press Release
On Saturday, December 14th, 2019, the Cops Care Cancer Foundation is hosting its 16th Fantasy Flight for Bay Area children stricken with cancer. Fantasy Flight is an amazing event for Bay Area children stricken with cancer. Police agencies from all over the Bay Area assist and contribute. Right now, we have OVER 50 families signed up which means we have 50 patients (VIPs as we call them) and we include their brothers and sisters as well. We will have approx. 200 kids at the event which equates to another 300+ adult family members. We will also have another 200+ police/fire and civilian volunteers the day of the event as well.
For security and logistical purposes, we do a presidential style motorcade from Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale to the SJPD Air Hangar at the San Jose International Airport in San Jose. The families ride in police cars and fire trucks in this motorcade. SWAT vehicles (Bearcats) are EXTREMELY crucial as we use them to transport children who are in wheelchairs. The CHP, SJPD and Sunnyvale DPS coordinate the temporary road closures for the motorcade but we welcome ALL police motorcycle units to participate.
When the kids arrive at the air hangar, it has magically been transformed into the North Pole with a HUGE carnival inside. The Sunnyvale Moose Lodge provides an amazing BBQ lunch for all of the guests and volunteers. We also have popcorn, cotton candy and baked goods for everyone :) The kids get to see static police and fire displays along with Police K-9s etc. It is an amazing day topped off with Santa arriving by police helicopter in the afternoon. As is tradition, the Chiefs and command officers from each agency help to hand the gifts to each child after their portrait with Santa is taken. EVERY child receives a gift, including the brothers and sisters. These gifts are purchased specifically for each child as our elves contact each parent and find out what they would like. As you can imagine, this is a costly but awesome part of the event.

San Jose PD reminds you to celebrate the holiday season responsibly
With the holiday season fast approaching, the San Jose Police Department reminds everyone to be responsible and not drive after drinking or taking medication that affects your ability to operate a vehicle.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over This Holiday Season
National Enforcement Campaign
San Jose, Calif. – The San Jose Police Department encourages everyone attending holiday parties and gatherings where alcohol is involved to use a designated sober driver.
This holiday season, from December 13 to New Year’s, the San Jose Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. In addition, the San Jose Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit will hold a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on December 19, 2019, from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM at an undisclosed location in the City of San Jose.
Sgt. Greg Connolly of the Traffic Enforcement Unit said, “Unfortunately, this time of year is when we see more people driving impaired. There is no excuse for driving after drinking or using drugs that impair. There are many ways to get home safely without driving.”
The San Jose Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol; prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs.
If you are hosting a holiday party, consider offering non-alcoholic drinks for designated sober drivers and monitor how people are getting home. If someone has been drinking and tries to leave, offer them to stay the night or take ride-share home.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

San Jose, Calif. - On Wednesday, December 25, 2019, at about 2:16 AM, San Jose police officers responded to a silent burglar alarm in the 1200 block of E. Santa Clara St. in San Jose. Arriving officers were flagged down about a man lying on the street who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Officers located an unconscious adult male and a loaded firearm near him. The male was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Follow-up investigation by homicide detectives revealed the following sequence of events that occurred in the same general area: The deceased male got in an argument with an adult male. The deceased male shot the adult male with a handgun and fled the scene on foot. A relative of the shooting victim, who was at the scene in a different vehicle, drove the male shooting victim to a local hospital.
A lone female driver, later identified as suspect Sabrina Marie Gutierrez, drove her vehicle onto the sidewalk and struck the male shooting suspect as he ran away. Suspect Gutierrez is also a relative of the male shooting victim. Suspect Gutierrez fled the scene in her vehicle.
At about 2:21 AM, officers responded to a local hospital on a call of a shooting victim that was dropped off. Officers determined this was the same victim that had been shot at the above location. The adult male victim suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
